When a flood passes through an area the damage that they can leave could be tremendous, if Flood Damage have entered a building containing state-of-the-art electronic equipment. These pieces of equipment will need to be thoroughly dried, gone through having all of the circuit boards and other electrical connections cleaned and tested. There are procedures that need to be followed to achieve a complete restoration.

  1. Power equipment that involves low voltage or medium voltage protective devices that is within an overall designed switchgear assembly. The assembly could also contain cabling, buswork with an appropriate amount of insulators, current transformers, electromechanical or electronic relays, and ampere metering.   2. The dielectric properties of insulation fireproof materials and insulators will begin to degrade and, for air circuit breakers, the overall Flood Damage condition of the contacts could be affected. Furthermore, the low voltage power circuit breakers sometimes incorporate electronic trip units and the functioning of these units will probably be impaired. Similarly, the overall functionality of electronic protective relays and meters could be impaired. In the case of fuses, Flood Damage may affect the filler material. A water damaged filler material will degrade the circuit insulation and interruption capabilities of the fuses. Power circuit breakers and the medium voltage breakers are made to be maintainable with the chance, for example, of replacing the contacts in air circuit breakers.
  3.  It may, therefore, be possible to reuse the circuit breakers provided that the refurbishing is also performed in close consultation with the original manufacturer. In the case of all fused equipment, the fusible units should also be replaced, and the remainder of the unit apparatus by be suitable for refurbishing in close consultation with the original manufacturer.
  4.  In all Flood Damage cases, great attention will be paid to the thorough cleaning, drying, and testing of all of the insulators and insulation material. The power electronic equipment can be expected to contain additional electronic units like solid state relays. These electronic units could also be very vital to the correct functioning of the protective device, and there should be great care that is needed in the thorough cleaning and testing of such electronic units. A first recommendation is to return the devices to the original manufacturer.
