Electronic Restoration >> Fire Damage

When a building that has electronic equipment stored in it has sustained a certain amount of fire, this will release the fire alarm and employing the fire sprinklers sending water into the fragile components. When this happens the equipment must be taken to a Fire Damage restoration facility where the use of electronic components can be thoroughly cleaned and undergo an extensive restoration process to refurbish them. These are the steps that should be taken.

  1. Any electronic component wire or cable product that is not suitable for wet locations and whose ends have not been exposed to water and Fire Damage should be replaced with suitable wires for use or continued use. A qualified person, such as an electronic technician or others familiar with electronic wire and cable terminology, should make the final determination of the product's suitability for wet and dry locations.  Any fire damaged component wire or cable product, not containing fillers, that is suitable for wet locations and whose ends have been exposed to fire and water damage, may be considered a candidate for "purging" the use of a inert gas under pressure to remove water contained in the electronic product under engineering and manufacturers supervision.
  2.  If this procedure is successfully employed, the wire or cable should be tested prior to re-energization. As a bear minimum, an insulation resistance test with a megohmmeter shall be conducted. Some wiring devices, most ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI), and several surge protectors. Some Fire Damage sediments and contaminants that are contained in water could find their way into the internal components of installed electronic products and may remain there even years after the products have been dried or thoroughly washed by the user. These might adversely affect the performance of those products without being fully apparent to the user local community.
  3. Also, electronic products, such as some GFCIs and surge protective devices, contain some electronic circuitry and other components which could be adversely affected by water resulting in the device becoming non-functional or a Fire Damage hazard to the user. As a result, such electronic products subjected to or believed to be subjected to fire and water damage are not suitable for a continued use and must be periodically replaced with new undamaged electronic products. Air drying and the thorough washing of water damaged products of this type shall not be attempted. Most lighting fixtures and ballasts fluorescent, with high-intensity discharge, and incandescent light fixtures are not intended for total submersion in water except for those that are listed as being submersible lighting fixtures.
  4. Fire Damage lighting fixtures and associated equipment may be damaged by corrosive materials, sediment, or other toxic debris in the water. Corrosion of metallic parts and contamination of internal circuitry might prevent the electronic equipment from operating properly. Lighting fixtures and associated electronic equipment known to have been completely submerged should be replaced. The manufacturer shall be contacted for specific instructions on the possible disassembly, cleaning, and thorough drying of all electronic equipment and internal components by trained personnel.
