Five members of Congress were recognized this month by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for their exemplary work relating to fire service activities.Honored as NFPA Legislator of the Yearfor distinguished achievements from last year were Congressman Bob Etheridge of North Carolina; Congressman Edward Markey of Massachusetts; and How To Repair Fire And Water Damage Senator John McCain of Arizona. Etheridge was cited for his authorship of the Hometown Heroes Survivor Benefits Act, which will provide benefits to public safety officers who die in the line of duty from heart attacks and strokes.

Markey was credited for his advocacy and authorship of the Cigarette Fire Safety Act, which will require cigarettes sold in the United States to be self-extinguishing. Bella began his long career in public service as a U.S. Marine and entered the fire service in 1947.

A member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for 12 years, he sponsored many bills related to fire safety. Bella then served two governors as state fire marshal. For the third consecutive year, fire protection specialist Tom Whalen has led his Duke University and Health Systems team to a first-place win in the annual contest.
