FEMA Grant Helps Restore New Orleans' Katrina-Damaged Archives Release date: FEBRUARY 3, 2012 Release Number:1603-963 NEW ORLEANS, La. 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today approximately $1.7 million in public assistance funding to restore New Orleans Notarial Archives' book volumes Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and historical records damaged during Hurricane Katrina.

As a governmental agency under the jurisdiction of the Clerk of Civil District Court of Orleans Parish, NONA is responsible for filing, maintaining Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and preserving historical documents, land records and other related contracts for Orleans Parish. Pre-Katrina, NONA's volumes were housed in the court building's basement, located at 421 Loyola Avenue. 

During the storm, the basement incurred floodwaters, resulting in both water and mold damage to many of the archives."Through joint efforts to establish NONA's extent of flood-related damages, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning it was determined that approximately 2,136 book volumes were affected by Hurricane Katrina's impact," said FEMA's Louisiana Recovery Office Deputy Director of Programs Andre Cadogan. 

"Our recent FEMA grant will help stabilize these damaged archives Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and recase or rebind them as needed so that they can once again serve as public documents.""The Katrina-affected materials contain the original evidence of transactions involving land transfers, business agreements, mortgages, estates, agency rulings and other agreements relating to Orleans Parish properties. 

The volumes, which date from approximately 1965 to 2005, are critical for use in title examinations Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and serve as a rich supply of primary source materials for historical research on their period," said Clerk of Civil District Court, Hon. Dale N. Atkins. "I would like to thank FEMA and the team who worked on this project to obtain its funding.

To assist with the process of accurately determining damaged contents, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning FEMA hired a conservator specialist with background in contents stabilization to help evaluate NONA's inventory. While more than 2,000 book volumes were found to be damaged by Katrina, more than 14,000 records were actually evaluated.

"We worked collaboratively with NONA and the state, evaluating thousands of archives to make certain that all eligible damages were accounted for Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and represented in this grant," added Cadogan.

FEMA's $1.7 million grant will mainly fund in-house stabilization efforts to restore the damaged archives, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning including the funding of a temporary workspace, as well as equipment, supplies and the associated labor costs necessary for NONA to hire temporary conservation technicians to actually conduct the work. 

These in-house stabilization measures will minimize the disruption of service of the records.Other project costs funded through FEMA's grant include the limited outsourcing of 51 volumes and the recasing of 1,885 volumes, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning where the extent of work cannot be best performed in-house.

When FEMA approves projects through its supplemental Public Assistance grant, the funds are made available to the Governor's Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning who disburses them to the applicant for eligible work completed.

The Public Assistance program works with state and local officials to fund recovery measures and the rebuilding of government and certain private nonprofit organizations' buildings, as well as roads, bridges Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and water and sewer plants. 

In order for the process to be successful, federal, state and local partners coordinate to draw up project plans, fund these projects Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning and oversee their completion.

Federal Emergency Management Agency historic preservation specialists will discuss the recent publication, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning The History of Building Elevation in New Orleans, on Monday, July 29, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Rosa F. Keller Library & Community Center, 4300 South Broad Street in New Orleans' Broadmoor neighborhood.

"Home and building elevations are a part of New Orleans' history, dating back to the founding of the city; however, until now, Water Extraction Equipment For Upholstery Cleaning very little has been written about it," said FEMA Louisiana Recovery Office Executive Director Mike Womack."

Following Hurricane Katrina, FEMA has worked with the state and city to comply with federal historic preservation laws while protecting their residents by elevating above floodwaters. "FEMA produced this book to offset effects to historic properties caused by FEMA-funded grants as required by the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106.
