Hoarding >> Compulsive Hoarding Elderly

As the population in the United States of older citizens increases, then also the amount of older adults that hoard. The impact of the Compulsive Hoarding Elderly behavior on the health and safety of older people and the community could be significant, so are we ready? Hoarding can be defined as the collecting of and the failure to throw away a large amount of stuff, some living areas so piled up that they may no longer be accessed and used for their initial purpose.

  1. When some of these elements exist, then hoarding is considered to be a disorder and disease. Research on Compulsive Hoarding Elderly behavior began as early as the early 1990s and has caused a widespread awareness on the sensitive topic. The general consensus is that about two to five percent of the population in the United States alone has some sort of hoarding condition. A fairly recent study has found that the beginning of hoarding behavior could start at adolescence, but that it becomes more severe with each year of life. The results from a recent study show that Compulsive Hoarding Elderly behavior is far more common among our older adults, and a report on hoarding found that about 40% of people referred were the elderly.
  2. As our older folks rapidly increase, so will the number of older Americans have a hoarding problem. Many times people that hoard are looked at as lazy, choosing to live in that kind of filth. And they are sometimes blamed for their behavior, as if they have total control over it. Instead, hoarding behavior is neither by choice nor the result of unwillingness to keep a safe and clean living condition. But, it does appear to be the result of complex medical and mental health conditions. Compulsive Hoarding Elderly was recently thought to be a behavior associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder(OCPD).
  3. Professionals now think it to be rather unique and somewhat separate from other neurological and psychiatric disorders, yet many co-existing with another mental illness. Genetic and neurobiological studies have discovered that hoarding behavior could be a result of genetic differences or even some kind of brain injury. About 80% of people that hoard grew up in a family that some member hoards, and gene research has also shown a definite correlation between Compulsive Hoarding Elderly behavior and a distinct pattern on chromosome 14. One report of nine patients that suffered brain damage found a connection between the area of the damage and the hoarding behavior.
  4. Many mental illnesses that often co-exist with hoarding behavior include psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, degenerative brain disorders like dementia, obsessive compulsive disorder, traumatic brain injury, bipolar disorder, intellectual disabilities, Asperger’s syndrome, and attention deficit disorder. A very common characteristic of hoarding is impaired executive function. Executive function is the brain’s ability to process information, which includes the ability to organize thoughts and activities, prioritize Compulsive Hoarding Elderly and concentrate on tasks, to use time efficiently, categorize things, and make decisions.
