Microorganisms, viruses, mold and fungi should be eliminated in the Dehumidification procedure. A sample of a disinfecting agent is ammonia bleach; but, other authorized sanitizing solutions might be used. For sufficient sanitizing the bleach mixture should be one cup of ammonia bleach to one gallon of water. Time is an very important in consideration to the sewage clean up.

  1. Bacteria to be eliminated will not become airborne as long as they stay wet. Once dried though, bacteria can spread becoming dust particles. Therefore, it is very important to bring the disinfectant mixture in contact with infected surfaces as soon as you can after rinsing off the heavy Dehumidification sludge. Damp wipe on the mixture on the contaminated wall many inches above the highest water damaged level that was reached by the sewage water and over the entire floor. Ensure that all affected areas have been wiped down with the solution. Full strength ammonia bleach might be required in areas of heavy infection.
  2. In this incident be sure there is adequate aeration and where your personal protective equipment. If the Dehumidification water has reached more than a few inches up the walls, then the wall cavities will need to be opened. Check all drywall with a moisture sensor and remove the area of the drywall that has become contaminated. Completely saturate the remaining exposed studs with the ammonia bleach solution. Completely dry all contaminated surfaces as much as you can. Bear in mind the ammonia bleach mixture requires at least 15 minutes to eliminate bacteria. Do not utilize a fan until the contaminated area has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  3. Any Dehumidification damaged carpeting that has been infected with sewage backup must be discarded under these conditions.  A water restoration company  should be called out for all contaminated structural materials like carpeting and drywall, requiring repair and renovation. Water damage from roof leaks, steam leaks, potable water and other uncontaminated ground water damage. Carpeting that has become water damaged from roof leaks, steam leaks, potable water leaks and uncontaminated ground water damage could be extracted as follows, carpeting that has been wet less than 48 hours.
  4. Remove all objects from the Dehumidification carpeting, extract as much sewage water as you can from the carpeting using wet/dry vacuums, contact a professional water restoration company that has water extraction equipment.  Only electric powered water extractor equipment that has been supplied with a ground fault extension cord can be used. Shampoo the carpeting with a diluted disinfectant, then thoroughly rinse and extract the carpeting again with clean water to remove detergent residues. Dry the carpeting thoroughly within 12-24 hours of cleaning. After Dehumidification work has been completed, increase the room temperature and use a commercial dehumidifier, high velocity air moving fans or exhaust fan to aid in drying the carpeting. Carpeting that has been wet for more than 48 hours, the disposal of water damaged carpets is probably the best option.  Contact a professional water restoration company for advice.
