There are many methods that a Radon Abatement contractor could use to lower radon levels in your home. Some of these techniques prevent radon from entering your home while others reduce the radon levels after it has entered. The EPA usually recommends the methods which prevent the entry of radon gas, like soil suction, for example, prevents the radon gas from entering your home by drawing the radon from below the house.

  1. Venting the radon gas &through a pipe, or pipes, to the outside air by going through the roof of the house where it is quickly diluted. Any information that you might have about the construction of your home would help your Radon Abatement contractor choose the best mitigation system. Your radon removal contractor will perform a visual inspection of your home and design a radon reduction system that will consider specific features of your house. If this initial inspection fails to provide enough information, the contractor might need to perform some diagnostic tests during the preliminary phase of the installation to help develop the best radon abatement system for your home.
  2.  For instance, your Radon Abatement contractor could use chemical smoke to find the radon source and direction of air movement. An experienced contractor can learn air flow sources and the directions by watching a small amount of smoke that they shot into the holes, drains, sump well, or along foundation cracks. The sources of air flow will show possible radon gas routes. A radon removal contractor might have concerns about the back drafting of any combustion appliances when considering your radon mitigation options, and might recommend that you have the appliance(s) checked by a qualified appliance inspector.
  3. Another type of Radon Abatement diagnostic test is a "soil communication test,” with this test if it uses a regular vacuum cleaner and chemical smoke to determine how easily the air could move from one point to another under the house’s foundation. By inserting the vacuum cleaner hose in one small opening and using the chemical smoke in a second small hole, a radon mitigation contractor could see if the smoke is pulled into the second hole by the force of the vacuum cleaner's strong suction. Keeping an eye on the smoke during a soil communication test helps the Radon Abatement contractor decide if there is a certain radon reduction system that would work well in your house.
  4.  Whether the use of diagnostic tests are needed is decided by detailed specific to your house, like the foundation design, what kind of material is under your home, and by the radon removal contractor's experience with similar houses and similar radon gas test results. In selecting the right radon reduction method for your home, you and your Radon Abatement contractor shall consider several different things, like how high your initial radon level is and the costs of the installation and system function, your house size, and your homes foundation type. The approximate cost of a radon reduction system is about $1800.
